The wind turbine is boxed and waiting to be returned for the third time to South West Wind Power. There is now little hope it will ever function for a whole year without major failure of some sort. There have been two major failures just this year, with less than 100 KWh production between. This failure on October 30, found one prop cracked with water inside setting it off balance, the stator main bearings failed, and shorts to the stator and the yaw shaft ruining the brand new yaw shaft I replaced at my expense in June. The stator failed/shorted already once and had to be rewound, just two weeks after raising it to the wind. I see no evidence the magnet can impacted the stator because of the bad bearings, not that bad, just growling. When I spin the stator by hand the turbine emits a foul burning odor. 11/1 Net meter 999808. Total grid feed 31.60 KWh. Trackers 18.64, fixed array 12.96, total PV 31.60, turbine broken. 11/2 Net meter 999799. Total grid feed 30.18 KWh. Trackers 17.81, fixed array 12.37. South West Wind Power is willing to fix the turbine but apparently I must pay shipping to send it back, which is more cost than the cost of the total electricity the turbine has produced over the last 20 months. I just read an article explaining that the wind speed charts for Missouri are wrong and over valued and besides that the readings are rated at 200 feet above ground level. Not where small wind power is located or financially possible. If I add up the shipping, cost of new parts, and labor costs to maintain this turbine, the cost of power generated is several dollars per KWh. I really need to question the logic in returning it to service. $15,000 to install a new Kestrel 3 KW turbine, I can install close to 3 KW solar PV and have several times the power year round. 11/3 Net meter 999786. At 2:00 I switched us back to our grid service and off of protected distribution. I also unplugged the large freezer which is using over 7 KWh every day, in order to stop using our reserve power in the net meter. 11/27 Net meter 999888.
